Many people don’t visit the dentist until they start feeling pain, but the truth is that most oral and dental problems start silently. Regular check-ups are not a luxury, they’re a necessity.
Visiting the dentist regularly – about every 6 months or as recommended by your doctor – allows you to catch cavities in their early stages or address gum inflammation before it turns into a chronic disease. Problems treated early are easier and less costly to fix.
There are signs that you should pay attention to and visit the dentist even if your check-up appointment is far off: abnormal gum bleeding, sudden tooth pain, a small crack, or a white or brown spot on a tooth that may indicate decay.
During the regular visit, the dentist performs a professional teeth cleaning to remove tartar (calculus) that can’t be removed by brushing, polishes the teeth, and applies fluoride to strengthen the enamel. They may also take X-rays to monitor the condition under the gums or between the teeth.
Don’t delay your check-up, even if you don’t have symptoms. What you don’t feel today might show up tomorrow as a bigger problem.
Before your visit, brush and floss your teeth as usual, and bring any notes about changes or problems you’ve noticed since your last visit. Regular follow-ups are the key to maintaining a healthy and long-lasting smile.
